Cabana Café

Cowabunga dudes! It's time for another exciting year in the Cabana Café at Daniel Island School, so crack open those books and dive in for some memorable page-turning adventures. After meeting personal reading goals and other criteria, students at each grade level are eligible to visit the café for a drink and a snack away from class. Staffed entirely by parent volunteers, the Cabana Café offers a wonderful incentive for students to catch the reading wave! Volunteers are still needed. To sign up for a shift, please email Jennifer Roberts at jcsroberts@yahoo.com or Janice Glass at glass_janice@yahoo.com.

"Kindness Kounts" at DIS

Aesop once said that "no act of human kindness, however small, is ever wasted". That simple yet poignant philosophy is part of the inspiration for an exciting new program at the Daniel Island School called "Kindness Kounts".

Created by Daniel Island School parent, Shana Meyer, the initiative was founded with four important goals in mind: (1) to foster a greater understanding of people with disabilities; (2) to bring our communities and schools together through awareness; (3) to increase the level of acceptance of peers who have a disability; and (4) to coordinate speakers, activities and events for students, parents and staff.

A newly formed "Kindness Kounts" committee is working on developing a student-run program for the effort. According to Meyer, these students will become empowered to reach out to fellow classmates who may be having difficulties in various ways. The "Kindness Kounts" program, which will focus on a specific disability each month, will teach students about disabilities and encourage them to share their knowledge with their peers. The initiative will be open to students of all grades, and children will be asked to fill out an application with a request of one referral.

If you would like to become part of the "Kindness Kounts" committee, or for more information on the program, please email Meyer at kindnesskounts@homesc.com. In the coming weeks and months, look for more exciting information about how you can do your part to make Daniel Island School a place where "Kindness Kounts"!
